Mass Career Customization

Mass Career Customization™ (MCC) is one tool an organization can use to enable the corporate lattice™. MCC provides a framework, process, and roadmap for organizations and their people to collaborate in building lattice careers that take into account growth opportunities, development needs, and career-life fit over time. It articulates a definite, not infinite, set of options along four interrelated dimensions of a career—Pace, Workload, Location/Schedule, and Role.

In collaboration with their managers, employees select options for each dimension based on their career objectives and life circumstances within the context of the needs of the business. They complete a profile (see illustration below) that represents their current career-life choices at a given point in time, and which can be adjusted over time. The profile becomes the basis for ongoing conversations through various talent processes, including goal-setting, career development, performance evaluation, scheduling/deployment, etc. The framework and process enable a wider lens on collaboratively developing choices that work for the mutual benefit of both the organization and the individual.

Mass Career Customization equalizer

Just as you would move the sliders up and down on a stereo equalizer to adjust the sound, MCC provides a scalable means for individuals to “dial up” and “dial down” along each of the career dimensions. (Note that, consistent with the theme of a more customized workplace experience, these career dimensions can be tailored to meet specific organizational needs). And over the course of one’s career, one’s career-life choices and MCC profile are likely to change.

Mass Career Customization sine wave

The inspiration for MCC comes from mass product customization, now an everyday part of today’s consumer marketplace (think M&Ms™, Starbucks™, and iTunes™). Just as the options to customize products and services increase customer loyalty and profitability, MCC delivers similar results—namely, increased employee satisfaction and productivity—by enabling the organization’s most valuable assets—its people—to accomplish its most important work and purpose. In short, MCC powers the corporate lattice.
